A few minutes ago I found something funny on Google Suggests (you know, the dropdown list of search terms that appears when you’re typing something in the Google searchbox).

I was looking for a good read on sleep… the best how to’s – just… because.

Well, that’s when I ran into these dandy – answers provided too (I’m nice that way).

How much sleep do I need?

That depends on your age. The rule of thumb is a lot in the beginning and then less with age until you start forgetting things. Then it reverses again. See below for exact hours.

How much sleep do babies need?

Newborns (0-2 months) need 12-18 hours. From 3 months to 11 months, infants need 14 to 15 hours. From years 1 to 3, toddlers require 12 to 14 hours. The time drops to 11 to 13 hours for preschoolers (3-5 years).

How much sleep do children need?

Children between the ages of 5 and 10 should get 10 to 11 hours of sleep. (BTW, what schoolchild gets THAT much sleep each night? Mmm… maybe that’s why math was so hard!)

How much sleep do teenagers need?

Youngsters in their enviable teen years (10-17 – 10? 10?? Who makes these categories anyways?!) need between 8 and 9 hours.

How much sleep do adults need?

And we, the hard working and entirely deserving of uninterrupted R&R, should (and let me emphasize SHOULD) get 7 to 9 hours of sleep. (No, not quite time and sleep or time trying to get to sleep and sleep or just not enough sleep. Just sleep. 7-9. Isn’t that fine?

Source: National Sleep Foundation

How much sleep is too much? (are you crazy??

Physical side effects of oversleeping include feeling extremely sleepy and groggy all the time. You awake from long blocks of sleep feeling unrested. You may be anxious, have low energy and memory problems. (This could be do to medications, obstructive sleep apnea or depression, etc.)

Clearly, people are clueless (like me) about something we devote about a third of our life to. Does that even rate on the stupid scale? No, not really. I mean we eat to live, and most of us still don’t know how to eat correctly. (Some eat for looks, others for health; still others can’t or won’t; and then there are those who eat, eat, eat – whoops.)

Insomnia, perhaps most popular sleep disorder, in fact has affected about one third of the American population. To describe it easily, you can classify insomnia into two different ways: how long it lasts and its sources. Transient insomnia lasts for several days where short term lasts for several weeks. Furthermore, the chronic insomnia can last for months. If viewed by what causes it, insomnia can be categorized into 2 categories: primary and secondary.

Transient insomnia is encountered by the majority of folks at some point throughout their lives. It is often as a result of worry or nervousness like worrying about the very first day school. In certain cases this kind of sleep disorder takes place as a result of disruption of the circadian cycle, a natural sleep cycle, due to jet lag or perhaps a work shift changes. Transient insomnia disappears once the stressing situation has passed. The causes of short term insomnia is often similar to what causes transient insomnia. If the person who suffers from this sleep disorder is unable to recover his sleep cycle, it can develop into chronic or long-term insomnia.

Primary insomnia occurs with no clear contributing factor. In some cases it starts as early as infancy. Things like high metabolic rates or overactive nervous system can cause primary insomnia. Secondary insomnia can be described as the direct result of another underlying cause. This particular sleep problem may come as a result of illness, medical treatments, drugs or consuming alcohol. Dealing with the root cause of secondary insomnia oftentimes solves the problem. As an example, in case arthritis pain keeps you from getting to sleep, then treating the arthritis is the most effective solution to handle the sleep disorder.

Insomnia is actually a general symptom and has numerous triggers. To be considered as a sleep disorder, insomnia has to meet a few conditions. Number one, the individual has to experience unhealthy sleep patterns, or suffer from having difficulty to fall or stay asleep. Secondly, even if a suitable sleep environment and an adequate opportunity to sleep are provided, the issue still appears. Lastly, the consequence of the poor sleep leads to some form of impairment such as fatigue and poor concentration while awake.

Quite often insomnia is treated using sleeping pills, either prescription or OTC. Fortunately, you can find some other treatments to overcome this sleep disorder such as behavioral treatments that include meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, visualization, biofeedback, sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy and reconditioning sleep restriction. These solutions in many cases are pretty effective.

A number of people with this sleep disorder decide on holistic, or alternative, treatments. However, keep in mind that this method may involve the utilization of herbal supplements that are not FDA approved. Other people look for acupuncture in an effort to relieve their insomnia. Passive body heating, that employs hot bath, is another method known today.

Our bodies demand for having quality sleep. This is the time to recover our minds and bodies. For children or teenagers, theirs’ are growing while they sleep. With that being said, it becomes clear that uncovering what causes insomnia is crucial.

For many individuals, the factors behind insomnia are associated with things like emotional stress and mental health. For someone with quite a lot of problems to solve, his brain is likely to be in overdrive condition attempting to resolve the problems that in the end will make him can not sleep easily. You can see that it is difficult to relaxing your mind when having unresolved problems. Having less sleep furthermore will only make the condition worse. Depression and deeper emotional problems can easily develop when insomnia starts this way as lacking of sleep can produce fruther problems.

Insomnia has also some other roots which are less complicated to handle where improving sleep at night can be obtained with minimal efforts. A few make the mistake by consuming the wrong things at the wrong times, leaving them awake when they should be sleeping. It could be that the causes of insomnia in some individuals are just personal habits that leave them worked up when it is time to go to sleep. Simple changes in way of life may resolve these problems easily. This kind of insomnia is not a long term problem can be diminisihed in a few days. In some cases, what causes insomnia are related to medical treatments.

To treat insomnia appropriately, you may need to visit a doctor or perhaps a mental health specialist. There are numerous prescription as well as non-prescription drugs specifically designed to induce sleep. However, never take them without serious consideration simply because a number of them can produce unexpected, potentially harmful side effects. The positives and negatives really should be considered carefully in each and every condition.

Anyone who has experienced the effects of chronic insomnia may eventually need to choose some form of treatment, most often some type of sleep medication. They usually make this important decision after consultation with their doctor. The choice to take sleep medication is usually made because people are seeking relief from the unpleasant symptoms of insomnia, including the relentless sleepiness and chronic fatigue. Sleeping pills can improve a person’s symptoms and their overall quality of life. But many sleeping medications have a number of side effects and can pose worrisome health risks. The use of sleeping pills is on the rise in the U.S., and this type of medication is becoming more and more favored as a treatment for insomnia.

There are two categories of sleep medications for people with sleep disorders: prescription drugs and over-the-counter treatments and medications. The body is affected in different ways by each type of sleep medication. People who suffer from chronic insomnia must take into consideration the benefits they will receive from various types of sleeping pills. It’s important for someone with insomnia to know how quickly the medication will start to work, and how long it will provide relief of the symptoms. The type of medication should be suited to the individual’s sleep disorder. There are fast-acting sleep medications that are designed for people who can’t fall asleep easily, and pills intended for longer duration which are best for people who can’t stay asleep.

A range of factors must be considered when choosing a sleep medication, such as the effect of a sleep medication on a person’s sleep quality, the individual’s ability to tolerate certain drugs, the chance for drug dependence, and any side effects that have been reported in connection with the medication. There are many important points for the patient with chronic insomnia and their doctor to keep in mind when choosing a sleep medicine.

One of the main ingredients in a lot of of over-the-counter sleeping pills is some type of antihistamine. Primarily used to alleviate allergy symptoms, antihistamines also have a narcotic effect that can help people fall asleep. But few studies have been done to determine the safety and long-term impact of antihistamines on sleep disorders.

There are four general categories of prescription medication for chronic insomnia: benzodiazepine receptor agonists, melatonin receptor agonists, barbituates, and antidepressants. Each type has its own particular benefits for treating various types of sleep disorders. But it is essential that patients are prescribed the correct type of medication that will best treat their particular sleep disorder.

It’s necessary to diagnose the cause of the insomnia before a medication can be prescribed. In some cases, the source of insomnia is another illness, or it may be a side effect of another type of medicine being taken for a different condition. In such instances, the sleep problem is referred to as secondary insomnia. When secondary insomnia is diagnosed, medication should be prescribed with the primary illness in mind. Many times, curing an underlying illness will cause the insomnia to be relieved.

Anyone with sleep troubles has to decide for themselves if taking sleep medication is the right course of action. Don’t think of the choice as being right or wrong. But if taking a sleep medication is a likelihood, it’s very important to know as much about the medicine as possible before using it as a treatment.

The level of physical activity which you put forth throughout the day is a major factor in increasing the probability of your sleeping well at night. The more exercise your body performs in the daytime increases the likelihood that you will be able to relax and fall asleep at bedtime.

You will observe a better quality of sleep when you are involved in regular exercise and the progression between the phases or cycles of sleep will be seamless and more consistent. Maintaining your physical exertion throughout the day should increase the ease with which you deal with the stress and worry of your daily existence.

Research studies conclude that a direct relationship exists between the amount of exercise people perform and subsequent feelings of well-being.

You ought to attempt to increase the level of physical exertion which you undergo throughout the course of a day. The purpose of this is to provide the body with sufficient stimulation such that it is not consumed with energy when nighttime arrives.

The body needs a specific amount of physical exertion to maintain a healthy condition. In addition, exercise as close as three to four hours before retiring for the night is not advisable.

Ideally, exercise should be performed during the late afternoon or early evening hours. The idea is to ensure that physical energy is spent quite some time before you intend to rest and become ready for sleep.

Exercise activities ought to be performed at a minimum of three or four times per week for durations of approximately thirty minutes each. Included in your routine can be walking or anything other simple exercise. Should you like, a more strenuous exercise such as running may be performed.

The overall purpose is to elevate your heart rate and increase your lung capacity. A consistent exercise routine, when inserted into your daily activities, will be advantageous to your general health and will be beneficial to your emotional health, too.

Together with running or walking, there are various other physical exercises which you can add to your daily routine to heighten your degree of activity. Should you be fighting with getting enough sleep, aerobic exercises tend to be of great use.

One purpose of exercising is to enhance the quantity of oxygen entering your blood stream. Many kinds of aerobic exercise are available from which you may select. The list of activities includes jumping rope, biking, dancing, and use of a treadmill.

There are also non-aerobic exercises which may be advantageous in resolving amnesia issues.

The exercises of yoga stimulate the nervous system, particularly the brain. The breathing techniques and postures of yoga enhance the flow of blood into the brain, which aids in obtaining consistent and rejuvenating sleep patterns. Regularly engaging in yoga exercises will also aid in your being able to relax, and will be instrumental in the relief of both stress and tension.

Tai Chi, attributed to Chinese monks, is an ancient art of movement and breathing techniques. The movements of Tai Chi are exact and deliberate, which is perfect for those suffering from joint pain or who are otherwise unable to perform the highly aerobic exercises. Research has indicated that Tai Chi is beneficial to those with insomnia by allowing them to relax.

Should you be so busy that you cannot find time for regular exercise, you ought to attempt to grab moments of physical activity whenever possible. At every opportunity, you ought to climb the stairs in lieu of riding the elevator, as any small change such as this will be beneficial for on your body.

Another idea is to park your vehicle down the street or around the corner so that you will have an extra distance to walk to arrive at your destination. As you can see, there are a multitude of little changes which will increase the level of physical activity you get during your day. The general purpose is to maintain a well balanced and healthy existence, while getting an optimum amount of sleep.

Sometimes it seems nearly impossible to find peace in a world filled with chaos. Why is this? Summed up in one word – insomnia!

Unfortunately, much of our lack of sleep come from, well … OURSELVES! We are too busy. We have to see everything. There is so much we are in charge of. Inevitably, we are losing sleep.

Some are in desperate need of a decent night of rest. Restlessly, they lay on the left, then the right, maybe even their backs, but sleep still alludes them. Perhaps you are one who falls asleep only to “spring” awake at odd hours of the night. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of “half-alive” individuals fight their way through the morning hours attempting to get something constructive accomplished. Next night, repeat “step one” all over again!

Of course, fatigue, frustration, and a genuine (and sometimes desperate) desire to want sleep but not knowing what we must do, we turn to our local physician who is more-than-happy to provide us with the latest and greatest sleep drug. Initially, these pills may give us the desired effect, bringing rest and some peace.

Sadly though, for many this is just the “calm before the storm.” Nearly everybody eventually sees a decrease in the effectiveness of such medications, and for some, they stop working entirely. The real terror is, that by this time, this poor sleep-deprived soul now has pill habit. Most pharmacy representatives assure our physicians that these medications are non-habit forming. The word on the street, though, tells a completely different tale. It seems that “non-habit forming” sleep aids can yield some pretty substantial profits! And we all know that money can be a very powerful motivator.

The good news is, you can go an entirely different route. (Insurance policies won’t cover it, though). Simply due to the fact that the major drug conglomerates won’t back it, insurance policies won’t acknowledge it as a truly therapeutic option.

Regardless what many “specialists” (with their many degrees and medical certifications) are claiming these days, proper diet has a HUGE part in a person’s ability to get ample sleep. Certain vitamins and minerals aid us in developing and maintaining healthy sleep patterns. Try typing something like “nutrients for insomnia” in your Google or Yahoo search and you’ll be amazed at the vast array of knowledge that you unlock.

Other simple practices such as avoiding caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol can also play a major role in getting a restful night, along with proper nutrition and routine exercise.

But now let’s discuss amino acids. Surely they are not as commonly thought of as a “sleep aid,” but their benefits in this area are undeniable. One such essential nutrient is L-Tryptophan. (The word “essential” isn’t just a “buzz” word throw in there because it sounds good!) We simply cannot live without this essential amino acid.

The body is not able to properly dissipate adrenaline without L-Tryptophan, or 5-Hydroxy Tryptophan (5-HTP), which is an over-the-counter product in the same family of supplements. You may have heard of this before. Typically, for the normal adult, about 100 mg of 5-HTP will start to have a significant calming effect, thereby aiding in sleep. It is generally considered safe to modify this amount slightly to find what best works for you.

Basically, when enough L-Tryptophan reaches the brain, sleep soon follows. Another easy-to-get amino acid, L-Theanine, now becomes part of the sleep process. As a rest magnifier, it helps you fall asleep quicker. Begin taking 100 mg before you go to bed.

Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, otherwise known as GABA, is one more amino acid that has helped many get a good night’s sleep. GABA targets the same area of the brain as many of today’s prescription sleep aids. Using GABA by itself, though, usually will not yield the desired results. Along with the other amino acids previously mentioned, try 200 mg at bedtime. You may see some added benefits.

So if you can’t sleep, forget the expensive, “non-habit forming” sleep drugs. Give these essential amino acids, 5-HTP, L-Theanine and GABA, a chance to work for you. They TRULY are a safe and non-habit forming means to get the quality sleep you want, need, and deserve!

Many people have a first hand experience with Xanax addiction. It’s chemical name is alprazolam and it’s produced by Pfizer, and I’ve been on it for years on an off and on basis. It’s in the class of drugs known as benzodiazapene, and is usually prescribed to patients that suffer from panic attacks.

I’ve had hundreds of panic attacks in my life. The funny thing is, the panic attacks stem from alcohol abuse, because alcohol is known to drain the body of Vitamin B. Which means, obviously, that Vitamin B is a mood stabilizer. When you don’t have enough Vitamin B, your body will naturally begin to stress out and panic. This is where you will see the addiction take place.

When you are taking this drug, you will see it is a cure-all. If you take a half a milligram, your anxiety abates and you feel normal, better than you did, even. This may not cause you to start feeling wonderful and on top of the world, but it can help you stop the panic attack and go on with your day.

If you take a full milligram, nothing will bother you. If you find yourself taking more than that you’re going to pass out or become a full fledged addict.

The purpose of sedatives are to calm you down. They help you relax when you’re stressed so you can go on with your day without having too much anxiety. If you’re addicted to Xanax you can’t go too long without having the drug in your system. You shouldn’t allow yourself to make it that far, but there are many people who have.

The dosage I’m on at the moment is one 2mg bar (which can be called bones or zany bars) three times daily. This is a huge dosage. Anyone else in the world that took that much Xanax would not be able to walk. There’s no way in my mind that anyone could be put on this dosage of a benzodiazapene and not develop some sort of addiction, or at least a dependence.

Instead of doing what the prescription says, I’ll only take half of what I’m supposed to. If I don’t feel sleepy and it’s getting close to bedtime, I can go ahead and take a half milligram to relax. But if I’m on the verge of a full out panic attack, I’ll go ahead and take a full milligram. The only time I ever take the full two milligrams is if the panic attack is full-blown and I feel like I can’t stop it, and there are even times I take nothing.

Just watch out for Xanax addiction. Xanax is a great drug and it works wonders, but you must be careful to not abuse it or be sure to use it in moderation.
